Big Picture - 5 E Lesson Plan
Here is a picture of the guidelines that teachers and students are expected to follow when using the 5 E lesson plan format. The format consists of five categories that include engaging, exploring, explaining, elaborating, and evaluating. For each category, students and teachers are shown exactly what to do and what not to do. The two columns are labeled as consistent, and inconsistent. This is an effective way to display the tasks for each category.

What are three themes that emerged to you from the 5 E Lesson Plan?
Three themes that emerged to me from the 5 E lesson plan format are videos, assessment, and designing experiments. I chose videos as a theme because they are a great way to engage students, which is the first step in the 5 E lesson plan. Engaging students to me is the most important step to the 5 E lesson plan because if students are not interested in what they are learning about, then they do not care to explore, explain, or elaborate. Finding a video off of the internet that is interesting and educational will grab students attention and encourage them to learn and stay engaged throughout the lesson.
I chose assessment because it is also a part of the 5 E lesson plan format. In the 5 E lesson plan, assessment falls under the evaluation section. Assessment is a way for teachers to get feedback on whether or not their students understood the lesson, and grasped the standards that needed to be taught. Formative or summative assessment may be used in the 5 E lesson plan.
Lastly, I chose designing experiments as a theme for the 5 E lesson plan because as teachers, when we are finding or designing an experiment for our students we want to prepare as much as we can. The 5 E lesson plan format shows teachers how to engage students before an experiment, explore the possibilities of the experiment, allows time for explanation and elaboration, and also allows for an evaluation. The 5 E lesson plan is perfect for teachers to use when designing experiments because it covers all of the sections a teacher would use when designing one on their own.
